Each candidate should choose a Confirmation Sponsor.  A Confirmation Sponsor is someone you can look up to spiritually, and someone to guide you in a time of need.

There are guides for choosing a Confirmation Sponsor.  Please note these are rules set forth by Canon Law (874) and cannot be changed.  Please read the following carefully before choosing a sponsor:
In accord with Canon 874 of the Code of Canon Law, the Church can admit a person to the role of sponsor if:

  1. he or she must be sixteen years of age or older; and
  2. he or she must be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the holy sacrament of the Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on, and
  3. not be the father or the mother of the candidate.

Note that the Catholic seeking to be admitted as a sponsor “lives a life of faith which befits the role to be undertaken.” this phraseology means that the candidate for sponsor:
a) sincerely believes and strives to put into practice the Word of God as taught by the Catholic Church;
b) regularly takes part in the Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation and
c) if married, was married in accordance with the requirements of the Catholic Church.
